02 / The New York Chapter: Seven Stages
Jun 2026The New York chapter consists of ten photographs. The first chapter of the series.
The mechanism is externalization. Structure acts on the body from outside.
The sequence passes through seven stages and closes in stillness. Entry, Isolation, Command, Speed, Compression, Resistance, Abyss. And stillness.
Entry is where structure takes the human in as a unit. Isolation is where the system fixes the individual in a separated position.
Command is where the sign designates gaze and direction. Speed is where speed reduces the body to a signal. Compression is where lateral structure compresses the body into a narrow gap. Resistance is where a deviation appears within the indigo. Abyss is where the deviation sinks into the depths. Stillness is the place the final three images (Dissolution, Victory, Static) form, where the result of the seven-stage flow unfolds.
The stages proceed in chronological order, and the sequence flows in one direction.

The stages proceed in chronological order, and the sequence flows in one direction.
Stage 1. Entry.
In Entry, a symmetrical structure dominates the frame. Under repeating grids and artificial light, the figures are aligned as components of the space, and the place functions as a structure rather than a passage. The space appears as the persistent structural condition that governs the series.

Stage 2. Isolation.
In Isolation, repeating tiles and vertical structures divide the space. The figures on the bench are placed in the same environment but do not turn toward one another, each held in a separated position within the structure. Within the system, individual presence is fixed and separated.

Stage 3. Command.
In Command, an EXIT sign floating above the exhibition space fixes the gaze. Within the structured environment of the museum, the sign designates direction rather than escape.
The figures join the flow without separate deliberation. The sign keeps operating within the space.

Stage 4. Speed.
In Speed, an accelerating subway passes and fragments the field of vision. Between repeating columns and windows, the body breaks down under speed and scatters into residual noise. Form is reduced to a signal within the system.

Stage 5. Compression.
The main hero of the chapter. In Compression, figures are placed in the narrow gap between two massive structures. Symmetrical forms narrow the space, and human movement stays within a limited range. Structural pressure governs the position and
movement of the body, subordinating presence to the conditions of the space.

This photograph is the decisive moment of the chapter. The external operation that began at Entry and passed through Isolation, Command, and Speed reaches its peak in Compression. The visual crystallization of lateral pressure.
Stage 6. Resistance.
In Resistance, within the dominant indigo, a red deviation appears in the windows and door of the building on the right. The shift of color cannot change the surrounding structure, and remains as a brief discrepancy.

The place that follows Compression. After external pressure reaches its peak, a deviation appears within the indigo.
Stage 7. Abyss.
In Abyss, repeating curved forms pull the gaze downward. The spiral blurs the distinction between beginning and end, continuing into depth with no visible exit. The red deviation of Resistance is reduced here to a single small red point within the abyss. The place where resistance settles into residue.

The stage of stillness (Dissolution, Victory, Static).
The final three images trace the disappearance of form. The place that unfolds the result of the seven-stage flow.
In Dissolution, the structure of the city remains sharply defined, and the urban system dissolves the body with artificial light. The
body is no longer distinguishable as a separate form, and is absorbed into the system.

In Victory, vertical structures align against the dark sky. Repeating windows establish a stable order, and no trace of the human remains within the frame.
In Static, a faint trace remains within the repeating structure. Movement has stopped, and the space continues unchanged. The final place of the New York chapter, the closing point of the stage of stillness.
The New York chapter is a system operation read as a process. It visualizes the temporal flow that external action exerts on the body.
The seven stages from Entry to Abyss proceed in chronological order, and the final stage of stillness unfolds their result. This linearity is the formal performance of the externalization mechanism.
The causal flow of the chapter. After the place where external pressure reaches its peak (Compression) comes the deviation within the indigo (Resistance). After the place where that deviation settles into residue (Abyss) comes stillness. Pressure, deviation, residue, stillness are the causal order of the sequence.
The chapter does not end in collapse. It ends in stillness. The structure remains, movement stops, the human is reduced to a residual signal. The condition continues.
Where London positions and Tokyo performs, New York enforces. Structure pushes the body from outside to set its place.
